About HEG
Where Community and Nature Thrive
Our Story
Hendreds Environment Group started with a simple conversation between neighbours about the things that worried them most: food going to waste while people went without, wildlife disappearing from hedgerows and verges, and a sense that the community was drifting apart. Rather than wait for someone else to act, a small group of local volunteers decided to do something about it themselves.
What began as a handful of people sharing surplus vegetables has grown into a network of projects across East Hendred — a weekly community café, a free food larder, a shared growing plot, conservation work for local wildlife, and even a tiny library at a bus stop. Each project grew out of a real need spotted by people living here, and each is run almost entirely by volunteers giving their time.
Today, HEG is as much about people as it is about the environment. Our projects bring together families, retired neighbours, growers, cooks and conservationists — proof that looking after the place we live and looking after each other go hand in hand.
What We Stand For
Community
We bring neighbours together — over a meal, in the garden, or at the bus stop.
Sustainability
We grow, share and reuse what we can, so less goes to waste across the Hendreds.
Practical Action
We focus on doing — sessions, plots and projects that make a visible difference locally.
Inclusion
Every project is open to everyone, whatever your background, age or experience.
